SERVICES
The NEES reputation is based on quality and innovation in a cost-conscious approach
FIELD SURVEYS
Field surveys are at the heart of what NEES does. Most field surveys are designed to document a bat community or detect the presence of threatened and endangered species.
NEES offers a full range of field services, including mist-net sampling, harp trap sampling, and radiotelemetry.
CONSERVATION BIOLOGY
NEES was founded to conduct research on the conservation of threatened and endangered species in the northeast. We have remained committed to the core focus and value of basic research.
Data collected by NEES has proven critical to major questions in the conservation biology of hibernating bats as a result of White-Nose Syndrome (see Frick et al., 2010).
NEES maintains federally-permitted biologists to conduct population surveys on endangered species throughout the eastern United States and works with private industry, state and federal biologists, and non-profit organizations to design, conduct, and diseminate research to protect bats.
IMPACT ASSESSMENTS
NEES provides the complete pre-construction impact assessment and post-construction assessment and mitigation services. In 2004, NEES became the first consultancy to conduct pre-construction impact assessments for the wind energy industry. To date, NEES has conducted desktop assessments and field-based impact analyses for over 70 projects across 18 states and Canadian provinces.
POPULATION BIOLOGY
NEES was founded by a graduate student as he was trying to answer basic research questions about the population biology and physiology of little brown bats.
In the era of 'big science', NEES continues to push for the value of 'little science' - the intrinsic need for basic research, the value of long-term research, and the potential for citizen science programs to fill the gaps left by the current funding priorities. NEES continues to work with state and federal biologists to conduct basic research projects that will provide answers to questions we may not even thought to ask ... yet.
ACOUSTIC SURVEYS
NEES continues to be an innovator in the use of acoustic monitoring for bat population surveys. With over 20 years of acoustic monitoring experience, in both zero-crossing and full spectrum technologies, NEES is your acoustic monitoring solution.
Unlike most consultants, NEES is fully aware of what can't be done with acoustic monitoring. We rely on our experience and ecological understanding of bats to design, implement, and interpret acoustic monitoring studies that will stand up to any objective scrutiny.
EXPERT TESTIMONY
As we have begun to understand the potential for land and energy development projects to adversely impact bat populations, the need to inform legislative and judicial bodies about the potential risks of development has become a high priority. NEES is uniquely qualified, through both academic training and field experience, to provide objective and informed opinions through written testimony or oral presentation to a judicial body.
INNOVATIONS AND SOLUTIONS
Whether it is an acoustic monitoring system to document bat activity from the top of a meteorological tower or a blimp-based platform to monitor bat activity in the open ocean, when there is a question that needs answering, NEES has the experience and expertise to design and implement a solution.
see our Research page for more details about the innovations NEES has brought to the bat research community.
